The wild country of the Tongass National Forest surrounds Sitka on three sides with the Pacific Ocean on the fourth. Adventure awaits at every turn.

Alaska Raptor Center

The Alaska Raptor Center is a hospital and sanctuary for birds-of-prey, as well as a premier educational facility. Its primary goal is to provide medical treatment to injured feathered creatures. A special few that do not make a full recovery may join the Center’s Raptors-in-Residence team. Guests can view these ambassadors, including eagles, hawks, owls and falcons from outdoor enclosures and observe multiple recovering eagles in the Center’s 20,000 cubic foot flight training facility.

Fortress Of The Bear

This is your opportunity to get up close to some of Alaska’s distinctive brown bears in a safe environment. Our three 1-acre habitats are located 5 miles from the town center in a naturalized setting, nestled within the breathtaking Tongass National Forest. Enjoy two populations of brown bears and Baranof Island’s only black bears, and observe their unique personalities from a large covered viewing platform. Meet experienced naturalists and bear keepers as they share their love and knowledge of this often feared yet most revered creatures of the forest. Learn the challenges we face as we work to rescue these incredible giants.
